Restoration
2001 - 2002
Hervás, Extremadura
The aim of the project is to restore the hostel and Renfe interpretation center with the objective of pausing the process of deterioration, which is noticeable as a result of the disuse and abandonment of the building.
The idea of the project is to recover the elements which form the station, from its historical knowledge (functional, esthetic, social, etc). The different typology of the two main buildings permits the distinction of uses that the program plans. These uses are considered supplementaries and they are ”linked” by open spaces, which are located between the main buildings and they include a more ambiguous program of uses.
The former passenger building become the new interpretation center. Interior walls are demolished in order to recover the original shape.
The former loading dock become a hostel, recovering its original condition as a clear space. Boxes made of OSB pannels (Oriented Strand Board) are placed inside, reminding the old packaging which used to take place there. These boxes don’t reach the perimeter walls, what strengthen the idea of ”only volume”. The required uses of the program are developed inside and between the boxes.
